⚠️ The Critical Difference

When you buy crypto on Revolut, you do not own the cryptocurrency. You own a contract that tracks its price. You cannot withdraw crypto to a wallet, and in certain account plans you cannot send it to other people. On Kraken, you own real cryptocurrency that you can withdraw and control yourself.

The Big Problem with Revolut Crypto

Most Irish Revolut users don't realise that when they "buy Bitcoin" on Revolut, they are not actually buying Bitcoin. They are buying a contract for difference (CFD) — a financial product that tracks Bitcoin's price but does not give you ownership of any actual cryptocurrency.

This has several important implications:

For short-term price speculation using small amounts, this might be acceptable. For serious long-term crypto investment, real ownership matters enormously.

Fees — Kraken is 5–10x Cheaper

Revolut charges 1.49% on the Standard plan and up to 2.49% on smaller trades. Premium and Metal plan holders get slightly lower rates, but even at best Revolut's fees are 6–10x higher than Kraken Pro.

On a €1,000 Bitcoin purchase: Revolut costs €14.90–€24.90. Kraken costs €2.50. On €10,000 the difference becomes €120–€240 vs €25 — a meaningful saving.

When Revolut Makes Sense

Revolut crypto isn't worthless — it has genuine advantages for specific use cases:

Our Recommendation for Irish Users

For any serious crypto investment, use Kraken over Revolut. The fee savings are dramatic, and owning real crypto rather than a price-tracking contract is fundamentally more valuable. Revolut is fine for tiny casual purchases, but it's not suitable as your primary crypto platform.

A sensible approach many Irish investors use: keep Revolut for everyday banking and small spontaneous crypto buys, use Kraken for any meaningful investment amount.
